Alexander Timofeev
A native of Moldova, Alexander Timofeev / Александр Тимофеев has been the recipient of awards for his compositions at Valsske Mezirici International Competition (Czech Republic), Slonimsky International Competition (Russia) and Carl Filtsh International Competition (Romania) and premiered his works at the Philomusica Festival (England), Darclee Voice Competition and Festival (Romania), Novye Imena (Russia), Northern Lights Festival (USA) among other festivals. He won the Third Prize in the 2007 MTNA Young Artist Piano Competition held in Toronto, Canada. He took the First Prizes at the Niss Piano Competition in Serbia and the Margaret Guthman Piano Competition in Atlanta, USA and won the Eastman School Concerto Competition. Dr. Timofeev is the beneficiary of the University of Maryland Fellowship. He is currently on the piano faculty at Rowan University in New Jersey.
In May of 2006 Dr. Timofeev had his debut as a conductor with the National Chamber Orchestra of Moldova. His conducting engagements at the Northern Lights Music Festival (Aurora, MN) featured Britten's opera Noye's Fludde(2008) and Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel (2009) as well as piano and violin concerti by Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Chopin and Schumann.
Dr. Timofeev premiered his Fantasy on a Theme by Mozart (2010) for four pianos at the University of Maryland and his Ballade for Violin and Orchestra(2005/2009) with Northern Lights Festival Chamber Orchestra and violinist Jaroslaw Nadrzycki (Poland). His collaboration with Rowan University pianists led to an arrangement for three pianos of the Lutoslawski’s Paganini Variations performed at 2010 Rowan University Commencement ceremony. Past premieres include the Cimbalom Concerto (2005) premiered by Rowan University Orchestra and marimbist Mika Godbole; Five Movements for String Quartet (2005), Two Symphonic Sketches for Piano (2004), and the Piano Concerto (2003) premiered with the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Moldova. Following an invitation from Romanian soprano Mariana Nicolesco, the Piano Concerto was performed at the Hariclea Darclee International Festival and Voice Competition (Braila, Romania).
Alexander Timofeev appeared as a soloist with the Iasi Philharmonic Orchestra (Romania), Radio-Television Orchestra of St.Petersburg, Eastman School of Music Orchestra, National Philharmonic and the Chamber Orchestra of Moldova, and Rowan University Orchestra.
As a performer of Zlata Tkach's music, Dr. Timofeev gave the first performances of Tkach's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra (2002), the Piano Sonata No.2 (2004), and the Sonata for Violin and Piano (2005) in collaboration with violinist Angela Molodojan. In 2005, soprano Tatiana Costiuk and Dr. Timofeev premiered Tkach's vocal cycle on the poetry of Agnesa Rosca at the Days of New Music Festival in Chisinau, Moldova. Alexander Timofeev performed Zlata Tkach’s piano music at Eastman School of Music, University of Maryland, Rowan University and Kishinev's Philharmonic Hall, Organ Hall and at the Moldovan National Museum of History.
Alexander Timofeev completed his doctoral studies at the University of Maryland, College Park (2012). He holds a Master of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music (2008) and B.M. degree from Rowan University (2006). His former teachers include Larissa Dedova, Lawrence K. Moss,Douglas Humpherys, Veda Zuponcic, Harold Oliver, Victor Levinzon, Aliona Vardanean, Mikhail Sechkin, and Zlata Tkach.
In 2008 Dr. Timofeev founded the International Society of Pianists and Composers - a non-profit organization that promotes contemporary music written for piano.
In 2009, Alexander Timofeev published a complete edition of children piano pieces by Zlata Tkach. The International Society of Pianists and Composers released a volume of Dr. Timofeev's piano works in 2010.
In May 2012, three CDs were released under the ISPC label featuring Alexander Timofeev - Tchaikovsky: Selected Works for Piano (ISPC 8.10007); Rachmaninoff: Selected Works for Piano; and Alexander Timofeev (composer): New Music 2002-2010.
Dr. Timofeev’s compositions have been broadcast on WQXR - New York's Classical Music Station. He has been featured in live performances on Tele-Radio Moldova.
